Are you in the Washington, DC area and interested in learning how to play taiko? Starting February 2010, you can do just that!
I will be teaching a beginner's class at the Capitol Hill Arts Worskhop:
Beginning Taiko (course #: S1AW5) :
The Art of Ancient Japanese Drumming
Wednesdays 6:45-8:45 pm
8 weeks, 2/10-4/1
2 blocks from Eastern Market Metro stop!
Registration begins November 30! Call 202-547-6839 for more information and to register. You can access the full course catalogue for the Adult Spring Classes here.
I hope to see you there!
I called to ask about this class but they said it was cancelled. Are you teaching anywhere else?
ReplyDeleteI can't tell you how bummed I am that this class was cancelled, but the circumstances were out of my hands and there was nothing I could do. Thanks for calling about it.
ReplyDeleteI'm not currently teaching other adult classes in the DC area and that is because I haven't found the space to do so. As you might realize, noise is an issue with taiko, so it's been tough to find the right place. If you have any connections or ideas for space, please let me know because I'd love to be teaching an adult class!
Best,
Carrie
Wolf Trap has an education center now, and they host a djembe drumming class. Maybe they would be willing to add taiko to their offerings.
ReplyDeleteI came across this post too late anyway, but I wanted to throw my support in. If you manage to find class space in/around DC, I would love to join!
ReplyDeleteHoward County Recreation and Parks offers classes in community drumming and in drums. Have you thought of contacting them? It would seem they have space where noise would not be a problem. also, how about U of Md?
ReplyDeleteI've wanted to do taiko since I saw it in Disney World...lame I know but I watch it every time it is done each time I am there
Hey all! Thank you so much for your support and suggestions. Unfortunately, I will be leaving the DC area shortly. If I hear of someone else who might start classes in DC, I'll be sure to post it here. In the meanwhile, Nen Daiko in Fairfax Station, VA usually has auditions for their group in the fall. Google them and check out their website!
ReplyDeleteHi all--just wanted to let you know that I'm no longer in the area. I recently moved to Hong Kong. Please be in touch if you need help connecting with Nen Daiko. I appreciate your suggestions!
ReplyDeleteHello all. If you are still interested we teach classes in the southern Maryland area and hope to expand to the Arlington area in the very near future. We do Okinawan style of drumming, clown, and dragon. If interested please check out our site at www.chinhamaya.org or email us at chinhamaya@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteHi Carrie, I'm a big fan of Daiko drums and would love to learn but I live In Va Beach so the commute would be a bit far.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to see a performance live, would you happen to know any details on upcoming performances?
Angelo
Angelo,
ReplyDeleteI don't know of any taiko groups in the Virginia Beach area. There's a map on another website I work on (http://groupmap.taikoforum.com/) that shows taiko groups in the US that we know of. You could check back there periodically and see if anything gets added, or you might consider posting your question on the main forum, through the same website.
Some taiko groups have workshops that are not widely advertised. So, if you're ever travelling you might try connecting to a group at your destination and see if they have anything going on that's open to the public.
Best of luck!
Hi again, Angelo. I just realized that I didn't answer your question at all--Sorry. You can find some information posted on taikoforum.com under Events for upcoming performances, but it's not a complete list because its dependent on participants to keep it updated. Otherwise your best bet may be to periodically search online to see if anyone's coming your way.
ReplyDeleteIf I hear of anything, I'll let you know!
I'm in Northern VA and looking to take Taiko drum lessons. These posts are all pretty old so maybe you've found a place to teach in VA or DC? I'd love to take the class!
ReplyDeleteTrish
Hi, Trish!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your note. It's nice to hear from you!
I am no longer in DC, but a friend of mine has recently started teaching there and has a 3-hour workshop this Sunday (if there's still space)!

If the class is full, he's the one to be in touch with about other upcoming taiko activities in the DC area.
Let me know if I can be of additional help!
Best,
Carrie
